(NEWPORT, RI) — Miss Rhode Island and Miss Rhode Island’s Outstanding Teen 2016 were both crowned in front of a sold out crowd at the Casino Theater in Newport Sunday night.
Shruti Nagarajan, a 24 year old student at Brown University, was crowned Miss Rhode Island 2016. Her talent is Bollywood fusion dance and her platform is “Upward Mobility: College Access for Low Income and Minority Students.” She will go on to represent the state at the Miss America Pageant this September in Atlantic City.
Kate DePetro, a 16 year old student at East Greenwich High School, was crowned Miss Rhode Island’s Outstanding Teen. She performed the song “Popular” from the musical “Wicked” and her platform is “Make a Difference, Make it Positive, Make it Today!” She will go on to represent the state at the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant this August in Orlando. DePetro is the daughter of WPRO host John DePetro.
On Sunday night, 20 contestants competed for the title of Miss Rhode Island, while six teens competed for the title of Miss Rhode Island’s Outstanding Teen.
