Steve’s Whitman’s Sampler of Valentine’s Day music

Sometimes, words aren’t enough to express the emotions you might feel for that love in your life.

Sometimes, your relationships aren’t following some made-in-Hollywood script.

Either way, music can save the day.

Without further ado, here are 10 songs – some ballads, some jams – that have perfectly encapsulated my love life at one time or another. Enjoy.

  • “L-O-V-E” by Nat “King” Cole. Recorded in 1964 just three months before passing away, this song is what everyone is hoping they feel in a relationship. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JErVP6xLZwg
  • “Romeo and Juliet” – Dire Straits. 1980. “Making Movies”. Love can be maddening and unrequited and star-crossed, and luckily for us, there are songs for those times, too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxfjSnMN88U
  • “Adore” by Prince – from the “Sign O’The Times” classic. The late, great Artist had passionately kept his performances off the internet (hence this acoustic link.)Luckily for us, Prince’s works have just been released for download on most music sharing services. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LckoV4YR12s
  • “Tunnel of Love” – Bruce Springsteen – Love isn’t always like Hollywood tells us it is. The title track from the 1987 release, this song encapsulates every relationship in just two lyrics: Then the lights go out and it’s just the three of us, yeah
You, me and all that stuff we’re so scared of  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4K7XZGeHTE
  • “All I Want is You” by U2 – from the 1988 “Rattle and Hum” release, sure it’s long (almost 9 minutes), but well worth it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bF-8cCCNoY
  • “Whip Appeal” by Babyface – from 1989’s “Tender Lover” and an extended version on their video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fh5ejGUTGAo
  • “Crash Into Me” – Dave Matthews Band. 1996 and the album “Crash”. Another loves-lost song, another man who would love to have his love back. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7in-9E3ImQ
  • “Sunday Morning” – Maroon 5. 2002. “Songs about Jane” – before “The Voice”, Adam and the boys gave us this gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2Cti12XBw4
