Wine Wednesday: Havens Cabernet (and WTSO.com)

I started this blog to review wines under $15 that will impress party guests and not break the bank. Normally I review one wine per week, but today I want to highlight a website which allows you to drink much more expensive wines, at amazing discounts, with no minimum purchases or membership fees. It’s called WTSO.com, which stands for “Wines Till Sold Out.”

I can’t tell you how many GREAT wines from Napa, Italy, and other famous wine regions of the world I have been able to try, while not spending more than $15 to $20 a bottle. They’re not paying me to endorse them, by the way. WTSO.com is like a secret club I belong to which I hesitated to even write about, to be honest, but I think the more people that know about it, the better it will be.

Thanks to WTSO this week I was able to try a delicious Napa Cabernet from Havens winery, featuring grapes from the Oakville area of Napa Valley. Oakville’s gravelly volcanic soils yield some of the most famous Cabernet Sauvignon’s in the world, including Opus One and Silver Oak. No way would I be able to afford a bottle like this normally; I live the frugal life of a radio DJ, after all! But thanks to WTSO I got a huge discount, and ended up spending less than $20, and it was delivered right to my door free of charge.

Napa Cabernets are my absolute favorite, and this one didn’t disappoint, with lots of juicy red fruit flavors, balanced with mocha and vanilla spice. What’s great about robust reds like this is the finish – you don’t chug a Napa Cabernet, you savor it, and enjoy the persistent flavors, which stand up to steak, lamb, veal and other grilled meats. It was delicious, and on my 5 cork scale, based on taste and value, I give it a 4.5 cork rating.

What I love about WTSO are the very informative descriptions and ratings of each featured wine. You get professional critics weighing in, as well as WTSO users, and the winemakers themselves. You really know about as much as it’s possible to know about each wine before your purchase – without actually tasting it first – and it’s not just a red wine club, there are fantastic whites, champagnes, and dessert wines, too. The business model is a) buy up smaller lots of wines by well respected winemakers, b) put them up for sale at big discounts, sometimes 75% off, and c) when they’re gone, they’re gone – literally Wines ‘Till Sold Out!

If you love wine like I do, and want to try something new, go to the website, or download the app. If you see a wine you don’t like at first, either it’s not your style or your price point, don’t worry: it will sell out, and there will be another wine featured later in the day. They’ll even send you a notification on your phone when a new wine is featured. (I have to say, hearing the WSTO notification on my phone is a nice break to my day!)
I love to hear your comments! If you loved, or hated, any of the previous wines I have reviewed, please let me know; and if you have any requests or recommendations for wines you like, send ’em my way.
