Shakira is helping restore access to education in Colombia following the powerful earthquake that struck the country on August 10. During a visit to Quibdó in the hard-hit Chocó region, the Colombian singer announced plans to support the reconstruction of at least 10 schools and help restore a local technological university.
The initiative includes an initial $1.25 million in financial commitments. The FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund and Live Nation have each pledged $500,000, while CAF Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean is contributing another $250,000. Shakira’s Fundación Pies Descalzos will work with the Howard G. Buffett Foundation on the rebuilding effort.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake caused widespread destruction across western Colombia, damaging homes, public infrastructure and educational facilities. Chocó was among the areas most severely affected.
Shakira has supported education projects in the region for more than two decades. Her latest commitment focuses on helping students return to classrooms while longer-term reconstruction continues.
