Brian’s Wine Wednesday: Razor’s Edge Shiraz Grenache

Razor VertI have said it before, and I will say it again: when in doubt, go with an Australian Shiraz. It’s a crowd pleaser, which is why store shelves are stocked with giant bottles of Yellow Tail, Rosemount, and Yellow Cake. I will admit to liking these brands early in my wine tasting career, because they are accessible, reasonably priced, easy-drinking wines. The palate changes, however, and over time you start to crave more interesting, complex wines. It’s time to take it to the next level.

Let me introduce to you to Razor’s Edge Shiraz Grenache.

I picked up a bottle of the 2008 and had absolutely no expectation one way or the other; it had simply been a while since I had tasted an Australian Shiraz. This got 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, but was still less than $15 a bottle, so off I went.

You’ll notice in these reviews that I say “well balanced” a lot. So many wines out there are one-note: too sweet or too bitter, too much of one thing and not enough of another. There should be a balance between fruit and tannins, and Razor’s Edge has this in spades. Opulent flavors of dark fruit and raspberry are balanced with a smoky, almost leathery finish. The way I see it, don’t pay $7 for Yellow Tail when you can spend $11 and get a far superior wine! Razor’s Edge is 75% Shiraz and 25% Grenache, the two primary grapes grown in Australia’s famous McLaren Vale. The 2008 is drinking very well now – pick up a bottle and tell me what you think!

3.5-corksI took a half cork away from the 2008 Razor’s Edge Shiraz Grenache for its bouquet. It can start a bit harsh, and needs to breathe a bit before its true character is revealed, so 3.5 for flavor/aroma, 4 for value, gives it 3.75 corks!
